The great majority of competitors in the Hand Sanitizer market use either Triclosan, Benzalkonium Chloride or a high percentage of alcohol as their active ingredients. Even after immediate application, Alcohol, BC and Triclosan based hand sanitizers have no residual effect. As soon as a surface is touched, the skin is once again contaminated.
In addition, alcohol based products are very drying to the skin. Because Triclosan is not water soluble it has to be dissolved in alcohol or organic solvents, which causes the skin to dry and eventually develop cracks. By having a drying effect on the skin there is a increased probability of further bacterial growth. A recent FDA recall involving a Triclosan based product showed that contamination with pseudomonas Aeruginosa was actually made easier after the skin had lost its natural moisture due to Triclosan and thus was made more susceptible to infection.
